Review I ve been using body balls for a while now in my exercising, mainly for stretching and, occasionally, for therapeutic exercises. I ve also noticed at my gym that there are lots of people using body balls of seemingly many sizes for not only stretching but for many types of exercises. As a result, I was quite interested to review the The Great Body Ball DVD by Andre Noel Potvin, a well-known figure in Canadian fitness education and medical exercise circles. Andre begins the DVD with an introductory section when he discusses the advantage of exercising with a body ball: because it is unstable (since it s round) it works the deeper muscles and really works your balance when you use it. He also discusses selecting the right type and right size of ball to work with. Next, he demonstrates some key concepts related to exercising with body balls, starting with proper torso stabilization, both sitting on the ball and standing with the ball. Good torso stabilization while sitting or standing is important not only in exercise but also in day-to-day life, and Andre shows, demonstrating on a fitness model, how to maintain it. Other important concepts demonstrated are proper breathing while working with the body ball, warm-up, cool down and reps and sets (which many beginning exercisers may not know). The next section of the DVD is the body ball exercises. A series of 57 exercises are each demonstrated by a fitness model and explained by Andre. The exercises are arranged in five groups balance (probably the most beneficial if you only do this with a body ball, that alone is worth it), stretching (the body ball is really effective for this), upper body, lower body and core. Each exercise is demonstrated in detail and in real time without any rushing: the viewer can exercise right along with the video, and even repeat an exercise if desired. Another feature is that not only is each exercise clearly demonstrated and explained, but there is also an accompanying visual showing which muscle groups are being worked. Following the series of individual body ball exercises are three routines, each of which is a complete workout. Each routine, one for beginner level, one for intermediate level and one for advanced level, is demonstrated from start to finish, rep-by-rep, in real time by Andre and a fitness model. So, the viewer can do the entire workout with them motion-by-motion and rep-by-rep. I recommend this DVD to any level of exerciser, from the beginner who wants to start using the body ball correctly to the experienced exerciser who wants to expand or enhance their workout. I definitely know that, after reviewing this DVD, I will be incorporating the body ball more into my exercise routines. --G. Lamothe, Athletics Canada, Vancouver, BC
